Frequently Asked Questions
There are many different senior lifestyles to consider. On the more basic end, you or a loved one might do well in an independent living situation where there are no household tasks like trash removal and yard maintenance. If more significant needs exist, an assisted living community offering hands-on assistance with personal care tasks like bathing and dressing might be more beneficial. Or if cognitive challenges exist and they are an issue, a memory support community offering specialized programming and care should be considered.
Q: Is independent living right for me or a loved one?
A: Independent living requires the least amount of support – or none at all. While on-site services and activities are provided, independent living communities are geared toward active seniors who still want the freedom to live according to their own schedules.
Those who have no trouble completing daily activities – driving, taking medication, preparing meals, maintaining finances, and a host of other tasks – can benefit from and enjoy the maintenance-free lifestyle offered at independent living or retirement communities.
Active seniors (and their families) love independent living because life at these communities means no more worrying about yard work, home repairs or dealing with the expenses of homeownership! In addition to alleviating household responsibilities, independent living communities – like ours at Abe’s Garden Community – offer access to first-class amenities and services, such as restaurant-style dining, wellness classes, a host of activities, and scheduled transportation for doctor appointments, shopping trips and more.
Q: Who benefits from assisted living?
A: Assisted living is perfect for seniors who cherish their independence but could benefit from some level of assistance or support with daily activities. Residents in assisted living communities enjoy the same amenities and services typically available in independent living, but they also receive support with such tasks as bathing, dressing, and taking medication. The assisted living lifestyle also provides a healthy, active lifestyle and plenty of that all-important social engagement.
The benefits of assisted living are countless. Seniors can make lasting friendships with individuals with similar life experiences while enjoying a lifestyle that offers fun, fulfillment, and a genuine sense of purpose.
Q: How do I know if a memory support community is right for my loved one?
A: This is perhaps one of the most difficult questions to answer as there is no one “best time” to make this transition. Every family is different, and so much depends upon your resources, support systems and tolerance threshold for the unpredictability of someone living with Alzheimer’s or related dementias. Typically, families will notice a decline in the health or functioning of the caregiver due to stress, lack of rest, and putting their own needs second. Others will describe the emerging relationship as “becoming toxic,” with the caregiver experiencing low patience and irritation with the new limitations of their loved one and the person with Alzheimer’s becoming increasingly noncompliant, agitated and frustrated.
Other considerations will be based on the availability of room in a quality residential care community, affordability and timing of the transition. These are things you should discuss with the community you are considering.
A family who is beginning to consider a move for their loved one can download or request a free copy of “How To Evaluate the Quality of Residential Care for Persons with Dementia.” This guide will help you know which questions to ask as you tour and how to continually evaluate the care your loved one is receiving.
