Programmatic Design Features
Abe’s Garden will be seeking LEED certification on the entire project—residential architecture & landscaped gardens.
Living spaces uniquely designed for Alzheimer’s residents; and individual neighborhood identities, so residents may more easily recognize the space as their home.

Conductive to a variety of extended family visits. Allow residents to assist in preparing food, doing laundry and other activities that encourage independent living.

Resident room features
- Following day clothing will be displayed in an open cubby to prompt daily routine.
- A window seat that provides a place for family and other visitors to sit as well as hamper storage for supplemental bed linens to facilitate changes due to accidents.
- Large format, interactive flat screen televisions with wireless capability for remote viewing, internet access, displaying schedules, events, menus, etc.
- Toilets within view from the bed as a visual prompt to daily routine.
- Color and material palette responding to issues of visual perception; i.e. eliminating contrast on floor surfaces (that can appear to be an obstacle) and providing limited wall contrast to help delineate items on shelves, counters, etc. from wall surfaces.
- Bed and entry door located on the same wall to enhance resident’s view of common area activity and patient visibility by staff.
- Large picture window and operable awning window provide connection between resident and the exterior (garden views or landscape views).
- Shelves for personal items, games, books, memorabilia to personalize the room and provide storage of non-clothing items. Upper shelf provides a place for plants and other items that personalize each room but should remain beyond reach to insure resident’s safety.
- Rooms will be decorated with photos and art work belonging to the individual resident.
- Furniture will look and feel residential while meeting required medical facility specifications
- A memory box located outside of each resident’s door will display items that assist with visual identification.
